Hi Jerry et all,

Family issues have taken a huge amount of my time and effort the last year or so. I will be more available going forward, but there will likely be periods when I simply cannot keep up with everything. Even when Michael was sick he was still aiding in email responses and list traffic and such. There are only so many hours in the day and I am but one single person. I’m going to get the list moved to a new host so that it doesn’t keep needing to be restarted at least, but thats going to take a little more time as well. Getting it off a co-located server will make it easier for people with gmail accounts or others that assume all traffic from co-located machines is spam to get it working as well.

I’d love to ditch the list entirely and go to a web based system as that is what new folks consider normal now days but nobody else already here likes that ;) There might be a way to combine the two but the research and testing takes time as well.

IN the depths of XTension i’ve been working on the new video subsystem. Just re-writing video pitcher is not really an option as the API for doing those things has changed dramatically. I’ve almost got the basic plugin includes completed for that unfortunately the system requirements have gone up a notch. XTension itself will still run as far back as usual but the new video subsystem, and more and more of the plugins are going to start requiring at least 10.15 Catalina. I have fought with the compilers about this to no end, but it is just not practical anymore to provide binaries that can run further back than that. There have been too many changes.

I know that this started during the core of Covid, while his (physician) wife was sent to another place to assist in hospitalized cases. And at times, I see snippets of what is going on, on his end of things. He stays very busy and I’ve tried to understand that XTension is probably more of a hobby to him rather than his main business. And I understand his frustration, with Apple not maintaining AppleScript the way that it should. But I do try to stay out of James’ way as much as I can. He’s had some major projects going on at his home and I’m hoping that the reasons for his absence are those, and not something more dark like a health issue, etc.

I’m still very impressed at the capabilities of XTension and what James has added over the years …Taking XTension way past what Michael’s original goals seemed to be. I try to add something here and there and find that, instead of asking that some capability be added to make my life easier, it has already been added and I just need to find the ability on the Wiki page.

Thanks,
 James
