Not much to add here,  it if you start building your own arduino stuff
(sensors and outputs and such) you might look at a radio protocol called
“LoRA”

It’s specifically designed for long range low bandwidth applications.

The arduino stuff is modular enough that I think you could still mostly
follow the instructions on the Xtension website for DIY Sensors and other
platforms, but just swap out LoRA radios for 433 or 900 or 2.4 ghz stuff.

In terms of getting signals between buildings, if you have network
connectivity among buildings (Wifi or whatever), xtension is smart enough
you can have multiple veras. So rather than try and build out a zwave mesh
network across 35 acres, do a “Star” network topology with IP/WiFi backhaul
between your “Stars”.
