Re: Perhaps what I’ll describe below will help me get back to feeling warm and fuzzy…

Hi George,

It’s possible to manually remove drivers. But different drivers install in different places so it’s hard to track them all down. Since you are just starting with your M1 you might want to wipe it and install a fresh system to clear the old drivers out.

There’s only a few chip manufacturers for USB to serial. Some don’t have Monterey drivers posted so use the latest they have posted. The Big Sur drivers I installed are working fine under Monterey.

For FTDI use the OS X built-in driver.

For Silicon Labs (CP210x) you can get a driver here:
https://www.silabs.com/developers/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers

For Prolific chips (PL2303) you can get a driver here:
http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=229&pcid=41

For Keyspan/Tripp-Lite you can get a driver here:
https://www.tripplite.com/support/usa19hs <https://www.tripplite.com/support/usa19hs>

You’ll also need the latest Wiznet driver:
https://www.wiznet.io/product/serial-to-ethernet/

It should be safe to install all of these. They will match up to their respective USB vendor and product IDs embedded in the device. You run into trouble when you install multiple drivers for the same device. Then the system doesn’t know which one to use because there’s multiples drivers for the same vendor and product ID.

There’s no particular driver for the W800 or XTB. The driver is for the USB to serial, not the W800 or XTB itself. Some devices will have a built-in USB to serial chip, which is almost guaranteed to be one of the above chip/driver combinations, so installing the above drivers will get those devices working (I have various Arduino UNO boards that use different chips but installing the above drivers make them all work).

As you add each device you will need to select the associated serial port in the XTension interface dialog, as they may have new names (the ones brought over in the database could be wrong).

Good Luck

Dave

Also, for the record James, my W800 is connected to a WizNet card so that’s how I’m presently communicating with it via ethernet.

If you could give me an answer as to whether the correct driver is built into either of those OSs or whether I will have to install them. Are they the same driver? If not, what are the names and can you provide a URL to each downloadable driver if they are different. I’ll bet I’ve tried about 20 of them in the last couple days and God only knows how much trouble I’ve caused myself.
