Incorrectly Reported Electricity Usage?

I appreciate all of the responses that I’ve received to this post. Many of you responded to me directly. And the consensus seemed to be that my contractor and his tools was probably responsible for the higher usage of electricity during the period of time where the energy usage should have been drastically reduced.

Since sending the note, I found one issue that may have contributed to a higher power usage. The furnace fan has been constantly “On” for a couple of months. I’m not sure when that happened but it is what it is. I set that back to “Auto” last night and the house was considerably colder this morning than mornings past. I may turn it on automatically when we go to sleep just to spread the air more evenly.

The contractor was using battery powered LED lighting and power tools most of the time. He did, of course use a saw for cutting boards etc. And then there was the drywall guys who used a giant filter to try to clean the air while they sanded. The small time of saw and filter just doesn’t add up to the power usage in my head. But I’m not someone who is educated in that aspect like many of you.

I have the letter in to the power company and I’d like to see what they have to say about this. The meter is very old and I’d love for them to change that out anyway. ;)

Thanks Again!

The graph that they provided showed that our energy usage stayed the same as the previous months and that we were “inefficient" users of power… Above our peers in the same area.

Other than that, the only other lights that are on are the ones that turn on as our dogs and cats move through the home. And of course, those turn off with no movement. We have two iMacs.. One for my wife and the one that runs XTension and the house. Heat is from a Natural Gas Source.

Even the outside lighting was disconnected during the period as the switches were gone. When we were home, we were living out of one bedroom and a hallway basically. The only time the light goes on in my daughter’s room is just before bedtime and that is less than five minutes. She just doesn’t spend time in there.

And I’m not even sure how to approach the Power company besides the fact that the house has been severely neutered for four months and was therefore impossible for the consumption to be even near the same level as before.
