I had a hardware problem on a USB thumb drive that reproducibly reboots my machine. Since then I learnt what files were affected using DataRescue.
I also found an app that calculates all file checksums and places them in a hidden file in each directory -as a tamper protection measure but also to identify files that have toppled bits in them.
Finally I learnt that there is an app for bit-banging your harddisk to knock out the bad sectors.
Many things to choose from.
