Here's an update everyone.
Some good info on Reddit, of all places. I'll post the link and then
summarize below.
https://www.reddit.com/r/huelights/comments/37ej5a/confirmed_euro_osram_tw_bulb_works_with_hue_us/
It turns out that there are different "flavors" of Zigbee. There is a
Zigbee LL (For LightLink) and Zigbee HA (For Home Automation).
The Hue ecosystem is based on Zigbee LL but the Osram Lightify ecosystem
(in the USA) is based on Zigbee HA.
So they're both zigbee, but they don't talk to each other. Bummer.
BUT THERE'S HOPE.
All of this "All zigbee isn't the same" business is no good, and Zigbee
figured that out, so later on this year there will be Zigbee 3.0 rolling
out. It should essentially solve this problem.
Remember my (In the USA) from 4 lines ago?
The user in the reddit thread was able to get his Sylvania bulb working
with the Hue bridge, by 1) working with Sylvania customer support and 2)
having a Sylvania zigbee hub handy. They loaded the european firmware onto
his hub, and then loaded a european firmware onto his bulb. I guess the
european version of the bulb is "LL" rather than "HA" based, like the Hue,
and after that he was able to get the Sylvania bulb working with the Hue
hub.
I'm not quite that devoted to the cause (I'd have to buy the Sylvania hub
just to reprogram the bulbs, essentially) so I'm going to just take this
bulb back to Home Depot. Maybe after the Zigbee 3.0 stuff has rolled out
and the bulbs on the shelves are running newer firmware it will Just Work™.
In the mean time I may pick up one of the Hue lux bulbs. I was looking
forward to tunable color temperature...but the spots I wanted to use the
Sulvania bulbs are multi-bulb-fixtures anyway. I don't particularly care
for the "Coolest Blue" 65k setting on the hue bulbs, preferring to back off
to about 58k. So the next test will be to see if pushing a "full" hue up
closer to 65k and putting it next to a 27k Hue Lux will give a tolerable
result.
