Boy is this topical for me. I just spent a number of hours this weekend
digging into Home Assistant to try to solve this very problem. I have a
great deal of devices in my network that speak MQTT including LED bulbs and
strips, outlets and plugs, drapes and blinds, cameras, infrared blasters
and LCD 2 and 4 line displays

I run an instance of Mosquito on my Xtension machine and have been
successful in controlling these devices from Xtension by publishing to the
MQTT broker by handing commands off to shell scripts.

However I have not been happy with using shell scripts to subscribe to MQTT
topics. Each subscription requires a continuously running process that are
difficult to monitor and maintain. My research this weekend is try to do
what Chad described. Have Home Assistant subscribe to MQTT topics and
forward the data to Xtension for processing.

I would love for Xtension to have a robust MQTT solution.
