I've been having issues with voltage sags ever since a solar
power/battery backup system was installed here, and so far, the
contractor hasn't been very cooperative in remedying the problem. I've
had to install multiple UPS units to protect various appliances and
electronics from these artificial brown outs. I read reviews at Amazon
until my eyes teared, and only learned that Amazon doesn't sell a good
UPS. Either the battery craps out early, or something in the
electronics gives up, and you're lucky to get a few years out of any of
them.

I ended up buying the following through:
APC UPS BE600M1 - $59.87
Asurion 3 year warranty for APC UPS $7.99

If the battery dies after three years and the rest of the unit still
works, I plan to hack them to use a standard marine deep cycle battery
that will cost about as much as replacing the UPS and will provide a
much longer backup time.

I've also gone to using MacBook Pro laptops for all of my computing,
including XTension. The built in UPS (battery) and power conditioning
has made them pretty much immune to the power fluctuations. It was a
PITA finding the adapters to run a big monitor and various USB
components, but there's plenty of advise in the XTension archives on
workable solutions. FWIW, I gave up on power line interfaces for
XTension and changed most of my home automation over to HomeKit based
hardware. The HomeKit extension James put together works well for the
things HomeKit can't do, such as monitoring the Internet connection,
and the power line.
