My system cost $999 with 10 cameras, 100 feet of CaT 5e cable per camera, the recorder, a cheap ass mouse, and a 3TB drive. If you do get a system make sure that you get as many cameras as you need since buying the cameras only for my system would have cost $1370 ($137 per camera). Sometimes you can get a 4 pack of cameras for around $360.

I got it during the after Christmas sale. Most of the security camera companies have big sales a couple of times per year.

Another thing I forget to mention is that the higher end cameras have HDR and gamma adjustments. Both are very nice for seeing into shadows and reducing highlights. It makes for a rather surreal image but these are not being used to make a movie, they are designed to catch bad people in the act of doing bad things and HDR and gamma make it more likely to produce useable images.
