Well this is a long story.

I have some land in the middle of the high Oregon desert and have several structures on the land. My wife just bought some adjacent land with a small home on the land. The home needs some work and since it won’t be occupied full time we are looking to save money with electrical and water. Just to have an active account on the grid costs $30 per month even if there isn’t any electricity used. And digging another well will cost about $5000 at a minimum. With that in mind we are looking at digging a trench about 200-300 meters to the house from our place to run water and electricity. Anything underground is required to be buried 8 feet deep because we are going to be going under a right of way which will never be used because we own the land on all sides of it.

So, my plan is to dig a ditch 3-4 meters deep and put water at the bottom and put in a foot of soil, then at least 600 meters of pex, 300 meters running in a loop from each house to be used for ground heating/cooling, then electrical wire to electrify the home from our place with some more soil on top of that, then some large conduit for future projects like data lines.

My goal is to use the temperature readings to determine heating needs in the winter, which can get to -40ºC/F to and use that same water for cooling in the summer when it is +40ºC outside. Anything that is above 0.6 meters is subject to freezing from prologued cold periods. Water is required to be buried 1 meter to prevent freezing. The temperature at 10 feet is about 20ºC year round which will be heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

I have a thermistor that would work for turning on and off the water pump which is what I use for my solar hot water panels but I can’t get any of that data into X4X. I want to find a new option that I can use to import data into X4X so that I can see the temperature changes from season to season. I also want to use the new system to track the temperature in my hot water panels which can get up to 150ºC under 80psia. I am unable to track that temperature and just guess or use a meat thermometer.

So, that is my project. It is not going to happen for at least 2 summers because of other projects. I want to get everything ready now because once we dig the ditch everything has to be ready to go in.
