As long as the VM has appropriate access to networking and USB/Serial adaptors as needed and you’re not trying to use any native USB devices like the CM15 I don’t see why not. The amount of overhead on such things is obscene. Why would you want to do that? What is it about Catalina that is so wonderful to you that you’re considering all the setup and maintenance confusion that running it in a VM will cause?

While the initial setup of getting XTension into the VM may be complicated, once in the VM it can easily be transferred whenever there is an macOS update. You may need to update the VM software but not the container.

My case is likely different than most, as I am doing development work, and need to upgrade to get at the latest release developments. Although generally I wouldn't ever run my own HA software with the latest macOS, for the very reasons you have already outlined.

However, for those that are adventurous, and like living on the bleeding edge. This gives those the option of having the latest and greatest macOS on their machines, so they can play with the latest technologies and other software, without interfering with the operation of the HA system.

It could delay the need to upgrade the version of macOS that XTension is running under, and possibly reverse all the loss of AppleScript functionality over the last few macOS updates. Giving them, and you more time to transition, if ever, to the 64 bit and AppleScript functionality loss.
