wink hub 2?

I’ve read the threads on their new local support and I’m not sure it’s “soup” yet, there seem to be problems with the authentication and they are making regular changes to it that are breaking peoples implementations of it. And it’s going to limited to just lights and door locks. That does make it more palatable to me so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

Generally if there are good python libraries for connecting to something I will be able to wrap them into a plugin without too much hacking around at the low level of the protocol. But that does mean that we’re reliant on what they support and since I didn’t write the low level stuff I can’t fix it as easily because I’m not as familiar with it. So it’s good but there are tradeoffs ;)

This is definitely the right way to go for their product if they want to reduce latency and increase customer satisfaction. Though I think it will ultimately be even more confusing for people if a subset of their stuff stops working or is working poorly but other parts of the system work just fine. They might have to extend that to cover everything. But then you’d need all the plugin logic in the hub and I’ll bet they don’t have enough resources in there to do that. It will be interesting to watch and I will keep an eye out. I’m going to ultimately break down soon and support some other cloud only devices like the Nest thermostat and such. Not today though, too many other things to hammer out to get ready for it.
