Actually, NVRs aren’t that expensive.  The Foscam 9 channel NVR runs about a hundred bucks without a drive.  You need to provide your own POE. As far as I can tell from their website, Armcrest and Foscam is the same company, though it’s not clear they use the same firmware. 

For drives for NVR I recommend these:

they are designed to handle surveillance video recording - I suspect their firmware gives a 90:10 priority to writing over reading.  They probably aren’t much good as regular drives.

The Reolink eight channel NVR, with its own internal switch, runs its cameras on its own internal network and comes with a drive and eight channels of POE.  It only supports Reolink cameras, but setup and use is a snap compared to any other system I’ve seen.  It cost  little over 200 bucks.  Reolink camera are on par with the Hikvision IP cameras I’ve tried, and aren’t that expensive compared to some others,  I use these:

They’re available for about 60 bucks.  The equivalent Foscam IP Cam is about $170, and the Armcrest is $95.
