Dont forget about the XTension kit for reading your smart meter! ( was Re: Now this is interesting!)

If anyone has a smart meter with the standard calibration output on the front or top of it you can use the XTension kit for reading those and getting the data into XTension. It doesn’t do any profiling on the output, that would be up to you. I’ve seen lots of devices that claim to be able to do that in the past though and they really don’t work as well as they say. It’s possible these new gadgets have completely cracked the analysis of the data, but I wouldn’t be completely surprised if it didn’t quite work 100%
I have a WiFi interface for the kit at:
http://machomeautomation.com/doku.php/kits/meterreader
too now, so you don’t have to setup an xBee network unless you don’t have wifi available whenever you place the transmitter. Thats not an option for purchase there yet, it adds $10 to the cost as it’s a daughter board and a tiny extra dongle.
If you’re not sure if your meter is supported I can send you a test device to see if it can read the data from it to make sure before you buy the kit. It’s been true so far that most, but not all, meters have this output somewhere on them. Since it reads the data being sent via IR form the meter you don’t have to open up your panel or do anything more dangerous than stick some velcro to the front of your meter to hold the sensor on. You need to run a wire from the sensor on the meter to the transmitter device which needs 5v power. You can mount it near the meter if power is available, or quite some distance from the sensor if you need it elsewhere.
