Zwave now open source

they have done 2 things, neither of which will immediately help us. They did NOT open source everything, only a short list of things. They did open the node identification tables so that will make it easier for people who are reverse engineering the original serial protocol to add more devices. They did not release that serial protocol though, probably because their partners who paid money don’t want the competition. So unfortunately this will not immediately result in our being able to support every interface out there fully. The zave over ip protocol that they have released is interesting, but it currently only connects to their own interface. It’s really a very strange design to my mind, they are going to sell an interface box that sits on your network which is fine. But that one box is going to steal an IP address from your DHCP server for EVERY SINGLE light and zwave device that is on your network! And then you can talk to the devices directly by connecting to that IP address via their interface box and their new protocol.

I know some of you for which this will never work as you have more devices than you have IP addresses on your local network ;) And it is going to create bonjour names, sometimes several of them, for each device. This is in the name of interoperation with the internet of things, however your internet of things device with a little arduino and a wifi adaptor will not be able to iterate a table of bonjour names with a thousand entries in it anyway. The whole thing is a bit over the top to me, or I simply don’t yet grasp the beauty and elegance of the solution. Perhaps if you have 3 light bulbs being able to find them via a bonjour DNS search rather than any of the other ways we already do such things would be interesting or even helpful, but i fear this solution is doomed to be limited to small installs.
