don't update to Sierra if you haven't already... again...

I’ve been lately being bitten by yet another really annoying bug in Sierra. There is something happening fairly regularly to me and many others that causes the GPU to hang up and if it hangs up long enough then the window server crashes and you find yourself at the login screen with all your apps force quit. So far this is only happening on my work machine and not on the server as I haven’t updated my own house server to Sierra yet. People are posting in the threads already that the 10.12.1 update that went live overnight does not fix the problem. We’ve all sent many error and crash logs to Apple showing the GPU hang and then the window server crash.

Many people seem to link it to switching between full screen and regular apps, or changing spaces or other full screen activities like watching movies or something. I don’t do any of those things in the course of a normal work day and none of my apps are running in full screen mode and yet it still happens just randomly to me several times a day while I’m working.

i’ve not suffered any data loss but it’s remarkably frustrating and a waste of time. It’s also completely incompatible with running a reliable server. It MAY be that it’s linked to doing things that we just don’t do on our servers like having lots of safari tabs open or something, but it may also be that it can happen all by itself while the machine is just sitting there. I know I’ve come back to my machine and found it in the logged out state so it does happen when I’m not sitting here actually doing things. But of course there are always lots of safari and other things happening in the background.

So I don’t know if it’s an actual danger, if you’ve already updated and haven’t had the problem then perhaps you’re not likely to do so, but if you haven’t updated yet and were about to do so I would wait until Apple fixes this problem. The possibility of it logging you out and quitting all your apps is just too much to swallow on an HA server!

Thanks,
 James
