hunkering down and bugging out

We did thank you :) We just got back last night. The house survived with no damage at all though the yard is a mess and my neighbors weren’t quite so lucky. The entire city looks like a war zone and I have several trees down and a couple of others that are damaged enough to need to be taken down now but no damage. The 12 foot storm surge that they were predicting never materialized either, so we didn’t have to test the flood vents in the crawl space which is also wonderful.

I have no complaints except that I keep putting off emptying the fridge, ugh… I have to go do that now and then go join my neighbors in helping us all clean up. I hear my neighbors chain saw working so I’ll go over and help him drag all the branches to the curb. Luckily there is no more rain predicted for at least a week here so there is time for them to get their relatively minor roof damage fixed and broken window replaced. There are some houses out here not far away that were nearly bisected by large trees falling through them. Interestingly enough it seems the super tall pines that are what is mostly on my lot were not badly affected. They have the root structure to hold them up going very deep. But the smaller trees like the live oaks have very wide roots, but not as deep and when the ground was saturated they just pulled the entire root ball up and they went over. So even the people that got hit by trees didn’t get hit by 150 foot tall pines, but rather 50 foot oaks… I suppose thats small comfort when it’s in your living room. We were very lucky.

Power is on, internet is on, water is safe to drink, sewer lift stations have power again so we can safely flush ;) Just lots of cleanup to do and work to be better prepped for the next one.
