Installing Sierra Beta

heh, no, don’t install it on your server, why would you cause yourself such pain? ;)

The only problem I’m aware of is the potential of long startup times for XTension. There is new security stuff that forces some apps depending on how they were installed or copied to the machine to be “translocated” basically copied to a temporary folder somewhere and run from that even though it appears in the finder that they are still where they belong. This is supposed to stop apps that are code signed from loading libraries that may be hidden in the zip file alongside them and doing malicious things with them. So XTension may take 4 minutes to launch, or more depending on the machine, and then it won’t be able to find it’s database if it’s stored in the same folder as the app.

So no, do not install the beta.

You MAY be able to get around the translocation by manually removing the quarantine bit from XTension, or by simply copying it to a different location. It may not bite you at all. Or it may be necessary to copy XTension into the app folder and your database into the application support folder.

if you really want to install it be prepared to spend at least some time messing around with that. Apples documentation to us developers seems to be at odds with what we observe happening to our apps in the wild, so far no guaranteed solution seems to be sorted out yet. Everytime someone thinks they have it figured out someone else can’t get that to work properly. I’m still waiting to hear what the final outcome will be. We may all have to move the app into the applications folder, or I may have to provide a separate installer, or any number of other things. I dont know yet, nobody does.
