I probably wrote this before: a jeenode pair: one in your car sending out blips every minute, one on the xtension computer. Range about 100 m in field, energy use next to nothing. In range: you are home, out of range: you are away. Nodes can send ID so multiple senders; one for you, one for the wife, one JeeLink on the xtension computer.

Can be done with zigbees too, I guess.
