Well, I returned the Vera and the AD2USB and got replacements. Still have the same problem - no serial device to adjust the baud rate on the Vera.

Vera support logged on the Vera again and was successful in getting the serial device to show up. However, the Ademco plug-in does not do anything. Nothing shows up. It allows me to save a PIN, but none of the buttons actually do anything to my alarm panel. Not sure where to go now. Total bust getting this thing to work.
