W800 issues

I ordered a new one just about a year ago and it works fine. I think the answer is going to be in the unreliability of the keyspan serial drivers. You can pick up an FTDI chip based one for under $15 and their drivers are rock solid for me where I know there are deafness problems with the keyspan ones now days.
Thats assuming of course that the answer to the OSX version is yes. On Classic keyspan were the best option, but alas not anymore. Have a look at one that looks like this:
