I’ve had a Barix Barionet 50 interface for a couple of years, using it to drive several 1-wire temperature sensors. It works very well, with few problems.

Since I’m using the temp sensors as part of a scheme to control the temperature in things like my beer fermenter and an improvised sous vide cooker, I worried that using unreliable old X10 appliance modules to switch the heaters was courting disaster. I decided to try using the Barionet’s relay outputs to control the heaters, but all the solid-state relays I could find were pretty pricey.

I finally found AutomationDirect.com, who sell a line of SSRs that are perfect for this application. The model I chose switches up to 25A at up to 280VAC (with a proper heat sink), and costs $18.50.

The Barionet has +5VDC available at an output terminal, and includes 4 relay outputs. These work great to control the SSRs. And of course XTension makes the programming simple. I’m a happy camper!

If anyone wants wiring details I can post them.

The Barionet 50 is a great little device, and has lots of other capabilities I look forward to using.
